WHO WE ARE

Project MOCHA emerged in October 2010 to address the disproportionate rates of HIV infection among young African American and Latino men who have sex with men. We are distinctive from other groups with this mission because of our commitment to making impacts at the structural level. Since our inception, over 50 individuals representing 20 organizations have shared their expertise, passion, and energy to address this complex issue through community partnerships, youth empowerment, and creating structural change.

Current community partners include:

  • Chicano Federation
  • County of San Diego Health & Human Services Agency, HIV, STD & Hepatitis Branch of Public Health Services
  • Family Health Centers of San Diego
  • Mental Health America
  • North County LGBTQ Resource Center
  • Operation Samahan
  • Planned Parenthood
  • San Diego Family Care
  • San Diego LGBT Community Center
  • San Diego Unified School District
  • San Diego Youth & Family Services
  • San Ysidro Health Center
  • Center for Strengthening Youth Prevention Paradigms (SYPP Center) at Children's Hospital of Los Angeles
  • UCSD Mother, Child, & Adolescent HIV Program
  • Vista Community Clinic

We are forever grateful to Children's hospital Los Angeles' SYPP Center for helping us create infrastructure for our coalition and catalyzing our vision into Structural Change Objectives (SCOs). The SYPP Center assisted us with refining our mission, adopting by-laws, cultivating our ability to leverage resources, and ultimately, ensuring sustainability of Project MOCHA.
